mommy, am I black?

This week we read to the girls a book about Martin Luther King Jr. We told them about how black people were treated so badly when our grandparents were groing up and about how King tried to help change that. Here’s the conversation that followed with Kelly.

K : Mommy, am I black?
M : no
K : awe, and that’s not fair!
M : hmm
K : am I white?
M : hmm… no you’re Latino
Monica : because my skin brown. And that’s ok, right Mommy?

By the way, we’ve been reading another book with them lately called “I wished for you” about interracial adoption. That’s where Monica learned that it’s beautiful for families to look different. I highly recommend it to all families built through interracial adoption.

So are our Colombian children considered Latino? It’s a question I’ve been asked….and have been solidly told NO by latinos—that my Colombian girls are not latino. When we had some DNA testing done and the ethnicity/race was very important, that is when we were told Colombian is not Latino. hmmmm…so we just say “they are Colombian”. It caught my attention when I read it on your blog and was curious what you thought.
