comfort “objects”

I’m using that term loosely. I figured that since the last post was a bit uncouth I’d just add another.

Kelly’s comfort “object” is to pick her nose at night and eat the buggers. I know, disgusting. And yet, as soon as she gets it all out, she falls right to sleep. For the longest time I didn’t have the heart to tell her not to do this. But, this past week Zach and I have been telling her not to pick her nose anymore. Use a tissue.

She can’t fall asleep! She gets really fidgety. So, yesterday I told her she could pick her nose again. But only at night, in her bedroom, right before she falls asleep. The rest of the day, at school, home, in public, she must use a tissue.

Tonight, as I was rocking her to sleep, she asked, “Mami, I can pick my nose?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes, because it’s night time and you’re going to sleep.”

“Can I eat it?”

“Yes.”

“Oh THANK YOU MAMI!”

Jen’s right! It’s hilarious! One for her baby book! She’ll be mortified when she’s older to read about her bed time routine 🙂 Tell both girls Abuela loves them too much!

Yes, it is funny but I know the feeling both of my girls (twins adopted in Colombia) do the exact same thing. Sofia even sucks her thumb and has her forefinger up her nose. Talent some say…yuck I think. It is hard though when we see how comforting and soothing it is to them.

T.Barry Brazelton says “loveys” are an integral part of bonding as young children. Usually these comforting objects/routines are an old diaper(clean-cloth), scarf, toy, blankey corner… Never thought we’d be GLAD for boys who had yucky gross thick runny noses throughout childhood-guess it all ran out/nothin’ left to pick 🙂 Enjoy each moment.

Ren and Zach–Have you considered publishing this as a book? Your stories are filled with love and laughter, the exact ingredients you need to make a happy family. And, Zach, I’m impressed you read the paper paper!
